In 1860, taking its name from of the founder TsujiRiemon, Tsujiri opened its doors to manufacture and sell tea from Uji. After that, it opened a store in Taipei, Taiwan, and consequently a first store called “Gion Tsujiri” in the Gion district of Kyoto in 1948. As an Uji tea specialty store, it has been working hard to popularize the tea’s rich taste and the pleasure it brings while maintaining a passion for making delicious tea as a part of its lineage passed down from the first generation. Earning the trust of tea masters, the store has birthed many famous teas as they worked behind the scenes of many tea ceremonies. Additionally, the store also offers a wide variety of items to keep up with the current trends, such as the store’s best selling matcha and hojicha confections. The flagship store in Gion is always crowded with many customers seeking delicious tea.
This is a view inside the refreshing Gion flagship store furnished in plain wood. In addition to all the product lines the store carries, it also sells sweets on the go such as soft served matcha ice cream and green tea. It is a store with staff who are always cheerful and polite in providing pleasant customer experiences.
These matcha gaufrettes called “Tsujiri no Tsuki” are a new confectionary that was created to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the opening of the Gion flagship store. On the crispy rice flour wafer is a luxurious spread of matcha cream created using Gion Tsujiri’s specialty Uji matcha. The combination of the two is an exquisite harmony. Even the beautiful packaging that expresses the phases of the moon is a fun design. A box comes with nine pieces (individually packaged) for 972 yen (tax included).

The new “face” of Gion Tsujiri is a stylish cube-shaped packaging. At first glance, it looks like an ordinary box, but in fact it is a piece of superimposed folded wrapping paper. It is the store’s unique device that incorporates a sense of gift giving in the form of traditional Japanese wrapping. There are different colored boxes for different types of tea, so it is easy for customers to distinguish when a flavor of tea is repeatedly selected.
The seasonal recommended teas that are sold only for a limited period of time are also worthy of mention. New tea is boxed in yellowish-green and autumn leaves color for the fall; the colorfully packaged boxes decorate the storefronts of Gion Tsujiri.
The colorful and modernly designed packaging makes them ideal as gifts. Customers are welcome to combine sweets with tea to make a set purchase.
Kenninji Temple in Gion is a temple founded by Zen master Eisai who brought tea seeds from China to Japan. As a store located in Gion that also has a connection with tea, Gion Tsujiri donated a “tea monument” in front of Kaisandou, which worships Zen master Eisai. Behind the monument is a Heisei Tea Garden that still grows tea trees.
